I noticed today that one of my female guppies was staying at the top of the tank and i looked closer and saw that she was all bloated and pine comb like. I looked up the symptoms on here and it said that she had Dropsy. I would like to know how she got it. The other guppies (2 female and 1 male) are okay as well as my 1 male platy and the algae eater. I've had them for uhh about three months I think. She's also pregnant . Can the other fish that I have get Dropsy from her? Thanks.
Acute dropsy is a bacterial infection so yes it can spread, but what are your water parameters? Nitrites, ammonia etc? Poor water quality can cause this illness. Your vet can give you an antibiotic treatment.
Chronic dropsy is often due to cancer in the internal organs or the presence of large parasites ( the effect of their size alone, or because they can cause liver or kidney damage or peritonitis). In such cases, the dropsy won't spread to other fish as long as you remove the affected fish. ("You and your aquarium" Dick Mills)
