Any idea how long it typically takes for driftwood to waterlog an sink?

it should probably take around a day depending on the type of wood. However sometimes you are sold wood that won't ever sink so you may have to take them back if it hasn't sank in a week.

It can be instant to taking years. Like pcam86 said, only wood will sink eventually. If it doesn't sink quick enough for you, weigh it down with something like slate or rocks until it does.

You can weight it down with rocks, silicone it to a piece of slate that can be buried in your substrate, or even screw it to slate with a stainless steel screw. I have had wood that would never sink and we just siliconed it to the slate. Les, my boyfriend for those who don't know, used to make decorations for people using artificial plants, slate, and rocks. He would silicone it all to slate and all you have to do is weight the slate with your substrate!
