today I found 2 pieces of drifwood in my local creek ( bull run creek, Centreville VA). Do I still have to soak them in water for a week??

I would boil them in water for at least 1/2 hour. There are many parasites and bacteria in local waters that tropical fish would never normaly experience . Don T.

Although Don did not say it, I would still soak the wood in your water as you prepare it for water changes in your tank. It will help replace the "creek" water with your typical chemical composition that you do water changes with.

Just an observation, I once did a placement of bog wood found in a local lake and even after a boilit leeched in some kind of sap when in the tank. I could see it looking like a light oil film on the surface of the tank. I could not see it did any harm to the fish but the water pH did go up (more alkaline) a couple of tenths. So just be observant after you place the wood.
