Drift Wood

Good question MrBink

I would like to know the answer to that one too.

Would the sap in the wood be harmful to the fish, or water?

Pine has oils in it that can be toxic, so it is a no go!! In the UK I know that Beech and Oak are fine for aquaria use, so long as wood is dried out properly and not rotting. Green branches are best left hanging in a shed for about 6 months to dry out the wood and sap, then get scrubbing and boiling just to make sure. I have known of lots of (very patient) people that have done this, with fantastic results. :)

Most true drift wood, IE wood that has been floating or laying on the bottom of a pool has probably had everything leeched out of it. Pine isn't the best choice for drift wood in a tank because of the sap but.... If its soaked long enough or boiled long enough the sap will leach out. Caution, don't boil wood in a good pot, trust me its a pain to get some wood sap cleaned off you pot afterward.
