Hi, just picked up some drift wood and rocks from the local river, and having read through the prepping rocks thread,I assume i boil the wood also? and for how long full boil to kill all bacteria? TIA

The idea behind boiling is to kill all the bacteria, so you have to figure how big the piece of wood or rock is, and how long it will take the heat to penetrate to the center. A couple of hours should be plenty.

I just guesstimate based on the size. It's worked so far.

Personally I wouldn't use wood or rocks from a river, who knows what it's come in contact with.

:D Hiya the reason for boiling the drift wood is to kill the bacteria and also to remove the tannins. That is what will make your water go brown, that can be remeded with regular water changes). I have been advised myself to boil the wood for 8 to 10 hours then soak it for a little while hope this helps you :) Shanna

Hi...I'd NEVER add anything like that to my tank. Although boiling may remove or kill bacteria, there are still some bacteria that form spores that boiling won't kill. But most of all, boiling may NOT remove certain poisons/chemicals that the wood may have absorbed out in the wild. There is no guarantee that over time, something might leach out into your tank. Just my opinion....SH
