Dragon Goby

Still, what a beast! His face kind of looks like a pug.

Here's one of ours with a face that only a mother (or oddball fishkeeper) could love.

[/quote]It depends on the species, there's one that is found at all levels from marine to far inland but the most commonly imported species are indeed brackish.

I really want one of those. I set my 55gal up with one in mind, but did not want to go brackish at the last min. How can you tell the two species apart? Do you know any where to find one of them that can go fresh? I would ditch any fish in that atnk in a min if I could find one. To make matters worse the local WallMart is selling them for $3.40.

All the violet/dragon gobies should really be kept in brackish, even the "freshwater" species. There are people who've kept monos in freshwater their entire lives, and with success, but it doesn't really qualify as best practise, and certainly isn't recommended. Likewise with these gobies; some species can survive in freshwater indefinitely, but since aquarists can have problems identifying the (at least three) different traded species, the best advice is to keep them at a specific gravity of 1.005 or more.

As for size, the problem is that multiple species are traded under the same, Gobioides brousonnettii name. G. brousonnettii itself should get to around a couple of feet in length, but the other two species are much smaller. G. peruanus is at least moderately commonly traded in the UK, for example, and it only gets to about half the size of G. brousonnettii. The result is that there are lots of reports of these fishes at many different "adult sizes".

Very nice fish though. Looks like one of those cool wolf fishes, Anarhichas lupus.

Cheers,

Neale

I bought my dragon goby in mind for my brackish tank, which had an SG of about 1.008. After being in brackish for about a 1month he really wasn't doing well at all, so I shifted him into a freshwater tank where he's flourised.

Here's my fella....
