Im worried that i may be doing the wrong thing when it comes to transporting my fish. I have a 10 gallon tank with a platy, 2 swordtails, and 2 pictus cats. from my home to my college it is about a 2 and a half hour drive.
I only need to make the trip with the fish in the beginning of the year, christmas break, and summer break.

currently I am using a 5-gallon bucket with some holes in the top. Is there a better way I should be transporting them?

maybe bring your heater along to make sure the temperature doest drop too long in the car.

I don't know much about transporting fish, but if they can survive a trip in a bag with a heat pack all the way across the US, i think you'll be ok transporting them 2 hours in a bucket. Make sure you bring your mature filter!

Give the pictus's back :) they wont have enough room in a 10 gallon tank :). Also i dont think pairs usually get along, groups of 3 or more.

I've moved twice and not lost any fish. Both times I did that I cleaned out the tank the day before. Then I emptied out half the water in the tank and left the fish in there. They seemed to do fine. When I got to the new place, I added the other half of the water and water conditioners (keeps them from stressing out). Like I said, it worked for me and I didn't lose any fish.

If the bucket thing works better for you, then keep doing it. Just make sure you are putting water from the tank in the bucket. Putting them in completely new water can stress them out and sometimes make them sick.

it sounds like they will be moved 6 times a year. Mayby you should find a friend that stays there locally and ask them to care for them on your christmas and beginning of year break( I'm taking this as spring break ). then only transport them during summer. With all those moves it makes me think the stress might do them in.

as far a spring break goes, maybe look into one of the vacation feeders, i don't know how they are, but that is what I am thinking about doing when I go home for spring break. i am going to post a question on them right now. It will be in the beginner forum.

i looked into those vacation feeders. DO NOT use them.I guess the plaster can make the water foul and harm the fish. just thought i'd tell ya.
