my heater for my nano tank, along with a miscellaneous rest of the order, was delayed a week, from Amazon... that seems long, like it was on a truck that got wrecked... Dan's has some fish that got to the local; airport, and never got picked up last night... likely the fault of a grounded incoming plane, even though there was no storms between us... got this e-mail from Dan's today...

"Unfortunately, all orders shipped out yesterday are delayed in Billings. The reason is unclear as to why, as both airports were operating normally last night. We are working with UPS to come up with a plan to make sure the fish will be alright.
They've already been moved into a heated container, so they're not sitting in an unheated plane. We'll be sending someone up to the airport to check temps and replace heat packs. In the event, all of them are cold, we'll bring them back to the warehouse and assign new shipping dates or refund orders.
Very sorry for the inconvenience."

I hope your fish are okay.

As a teacher, I thoroughly approve of winter storms. Winter storms = days off. Our Winter Break ended Friday, but we haven't started school yet due to 2 snow days. :)

Wait, I'm not one to start conspiracy theories, but they are held up in.... Billings?

What potential fish pirate resides there? Just askin'.

You know, wild west. Hold up. A fellow moderator on the forum, so with an alibi. Always on the run...

We've had one day this winter when receiving fish at the airport would have killed them.

I've had one day when I was near the airport with a shipment scheduled. I had to cancel it.

When I get NEXT DAY AIR it takes 3 days??????

In the case of both my “day job” (I’m in the building materials business), and my herp breeding hobby, the overwhelming cause of most of my headaches is shipping.

appears the storms not totally to blame.... this from Dan's yesterday...

" We went to pick up the fish, and they were cold so we brought them back to the warehouse. The majority are sluggish, but are alive and we expect to recover.

We talked to our UPS rep, and UPS is having staffing issues and has a large backlog from the holidays that they expect to clear in the coming days. We don't feel it's safe to ship this week due to the high likelihood of delays, so we're moving all 1/6 orders to 1/13."

Dan's are about as good as it gets with regular shipping, I'm glad they took them all back to reassess... my fish were mostly cool water barb family, but other orders, could more easily get sick, with the addd stress of getting cold, along with the stress of shipping... I actually have a couple other orders out, one actually came yesterday with cold fish, and the others are also delayed, they said, because of the weather...

I have a "tempering room" at work, I set the temperature to 80, to slowly warm the fish that arrived cold, for a couple hours, until I could bring them home, but still lost one or two...

so, this has been really bad timing for me to order... I had a few extra dollars around Christmas, and placed a few orders for fish ( plants ordered was also a disaster )... so everything was ordered the 3rd week of December, one order, my 1st from Hawaii, probably has to fly into LA ( big fires, service disrupted ) the weather in the central US, and UPS shortage of help. after the holidays ( listed above ) just got notice that one order, going to be delayed even further, due to Martin Luther King Day holiday, so the holiday delays, are running into each other... plus while the storms down south, and east and west, we have been calm, but colder than normal... ( note to self... do not ever order fish or plants in the winter, or around the holidays... it's a different world we live in today... plants all frozen, fish paid for, some, more than a month, before expected receipt... high death rate on everything that finally gets here...

I need to ship a box of ive plants and plant supplies to a member here in CA. I was waiting until after the Xmas shipping crush and then the post Xmas return crunch. I do not have a shipping account. I have friend with them who allow me to ship using them. One such friend is in CA bit too far south of LA.

I spoke to my friend yesterday afternoon and alerted then to the fact I was looking got ship the box next week. I asked if the fires were causing delays in LAX. I assumed the smoke and planes flying around working to halt the fires might be an issue.

I was told that there is a problem but it is not so much the smoke etc. The problem is the insanely high winds driving the fires. These winds are all over the area and they do interfere with air traffic. My friend suggested that I skip next week and look to the week after as high winds were expected again. Last week I thought I could ship this past Tues or Weds. but that idea was quickly abandoned.

Plants do better in transit than fish in terms of the risks. I already had planned to send them in a styro with a heat pack since out temps here are on the chilly side, especially over night when wind chill hits single digits now and then.

The high winds subsided yesterday but are expected to return. Are you using FedEx, USPS or something else? I ask because there has been serious infrastructure damage to USPS offices in the LA area. I spoke with a friend last night who lost her house and she mentioned her entire village is gone including the schools and post office.

Wow. That’s sad. My son is still on standby to evacuate from the Hollywood Hills. I wish he would just leave and stay with us until the conflagration is over. He works remotely. But you can’t tell a grown up son what to do.

I bought some juvenile fish to my lfs this morning and the owner was upset because a large shipment of his fish is being held up.
