Dont Want Hybrids - How Can I Avoid It

My understanding is...

If i put mollies or platys with limias then they wont cross
and guppies and platys wont cross
Mollies and limias can cross, but your right about guppies and platies not crossing.

but guppies and limias will
platys and mollies will
Guppies and limias can cross (but I don't know how readily), but platies and mollies cant cross.

and what crosses with swordtails????
Platys do. Most cheap platies you buy at the lfs already have swordtail in them.

SO i have platys , guppies and limias and want either mollies or swords or maybe some more rarer live bearers

BASICALLY i want as many different types of livebearers as possible spread between 2 TANKS is there maybe a weblink with all the info and i'll read it myself just couldn't find anywhere with all the info i need -- tank sizes 180 ltr and the new one either 130 or 180 ltr and the 54 ltr for fry over flow

I want to know what other rare live bearers would mix with the ones i have and wont hybridise with the ones i have

Thanks Sarah xxx ARGH !!!!! :shout: - my little brain hurts

well guppies and endlers will cross breed.

and platys mollys and swordies will breed so you need 3 tank or 2 with a divider

see i'm confused again now three fingers said platys and moliies wont cross and you say platys and mollies will ARGH!!! lol

i know for definate that
endlers , guppies and limias WILL cross

guppies endlers and mollys can cross breed with each other they are all from the same family (poecilia

platys and swordtails will cross breed with each other they are from the same family Xiphophorus

Xiphophorus and poecilia wont cross breed with each oter.

any fish with the same first scientific name can cross breed with each other.

thanks guys but limias cross and they havent got the same name ARGH lol but limias are a member of the poecilia family
family so as long as i check the families i should be ok

I really read up on my live bearers before i got them and didnt want hybrids but there wasn't much info on hybridising once i got past platy , guppy's etc and moving onto the rarer ones

and most people i asked or read werent sure on the platy cross molly question

oh my bad. look at the first part of the scientific name. if its the same they will breed
Only in some cases, that is by no means a definitive rule.

guppies endlers and mollys can cross breed with each other they are all from the same family (poecilia

Guppies and mollies can cross, however the vast majority of the time it doesn't work, and even when it does the fry are usually too weak to survive. Don't worry about keeping them together. Guppies and mollies are in the same genus.

Limias are fish in the genus Limia, but can still hybridise with both guppies and mollies.

I would suggest keeping limias, platys and something like halfbeaks in one tank, and guppies, mollies, swordtails and something like Heterandria formosa (which should be OK with the others as long as theres enough cover).

I have heterandria formosa in one of my tanks and I would not feed them to swordtails or mollies. They are less than half the size of my endlers which are quite a bit smaller than guppies. At full grown, they are the size of one month old guppies or newborn ameca splendens. It is hardly big enough for them to do well with those bigger predators no matter how much cover. Some might survive but it would be hard to say they certainly would.

Limia and guppy will cross.
Limia and endler will cross.
Limia and Molly will cross.
Molly and guppy will cross.
Molly and Endler will cross.
Guppy and Endler will cross.
Platy and Swordtail will cross.

Platy and Molly won't cross.
Molly and Swordtail won't cross.

thanks for all the replies thats certainly cleared it up for me
i just dont want to fart about with these poor fishes and end up with weird hybrids so now i can avoid that

thanks again guys
