Don't know where to start with planted lighting

I have a 29g planted tank that I am rapidly realizing needs more light. It is just the standard single flourescent bulb type, built into the hood. I really could use some suggestions of both bulbs, but double bulb light strips. The plan right now is to replace the hood with just a simpler glass top, and add some higher powered lighting, but I don't know what I need, and what is quality.
