Wasp fish?

I've never seen or heard of it before. I wouldn't buy it now, but it looks cool so I'd like to know anything about it for future reference.

(it probably gets huge or something so I promise not to throw a tantrum)

Looks to me like a saltie. Probably a grouper of some sort. Or a commet the mouth looks like it could fit either one.

HTH

And Hope I havent made a fool of myself

So it's brackish? Poop. Why can't the seller just put it in the saltwater section? Why must my brain be tormented with thoughts of neat fish, only to have hopes dashed? Why?!?!?!

But seriously, thanks for the fast help!

Wasp fish are very poisenous and are only recomended to be kept by very experienced fish keepers, they are closely related to lionfish and the the stings can be fatal or at best will make you very ill. They would be best kept in a species only tank as they are predators but since they do not grow very large (around 4 to 6" for most species) cannot be housed with other larger predatory brackish fish.

They have one of these at my local dodgy fish store. They were selling it as a freshwater lion fish.

If seems that this species is often found in the hobby being sold as freshwater, but is indeed hard brackish to marine. It seems that they will live for about three months in a freshwater tank. Just long enough for the LFS to wash their hands of the fish and blame it's demise on the fishkeeper.

After producing several books and printouts about this fish, and at a mention of the RSPCA, my LFS finally moved it to a brackish tank... where it ate all his knight gobies.

I have three of these fish...they were sold to me as butterfly gobies and the lfs i got them from is still selling them under that name but atleast they have them in a brackish tank! they are really cool fish. the three of them always hang out togeather but at night they are very active. they will eat anything that they can fit into there mouth. they are all about 2" right now. they are also great ambush hunters. they do leave all of my other fish alone though includeing the bummble bee gobies. they love it when i feed my puffers ghost shrimp they are always chaseing them around tring to eat them. they dont ever try and eat any of my fish. anyways they are really cool fish.

Poisonous? That would be just what I need, knowing me I'd end up getting stung and die. I always knew this hobby was trying to kill me...

Maybe some day far in the future.... :shifty:

Thanks you guys!
