Hi Guys,

Does anyone keep any of there tropical fish tanks in a garage UK ? I have ran out of space inside the house and have experienced a slight baby boom … one female birthed 62 fry yesterday. I will be selling them in 3/4 months when they grow but it the mean time I thinking of setting up a grow out thank in my garage In the UK as I do have a spare tank whilst the fry won’t need to me moved out for a little while I would need to cycle the tank . My friend said he thinks the temperature would be too cold and vary over night but won’t a good heater be okay ?

Many TIA

I'm not in the UK, but in a colder climate. Everything depends on the garage itself, and how well constructed it is. I insulated half of mine (in Canada), but in the uninsulated half, I could raise livebearers from May to October. My temperature today is 17, and nights drop to about 10. A tank large enough for 60 fry would hold heat. A heater set at around 22 wouldn't beat itself to death keeping up.

I'm coastal, so I rarely deal with temps above 25. Inland, 30 to 35 happens during the day in July and sometimes August. I'll deal with 20-25 for 3 months, with nights in the teens. I leave the windows open in the insulated, fish-garage I have set up. Heat would be a bigger worry - the last time I was in London in summer, I roasted.

In the past, I knew older British fishkeepers who had insulated garden sheds for use as fishrooms. They needed some sort of heat source for the winters, but they kept and bred some fantastic fish. I still don't know how they got so many tanks into such tiny space, but that they did.

My tanks are all in the garage and have been for 8 years.

I have a 9ft,6ft with their associated sumps and a marine small reef tank

No issues other than energy prices were quite high but I fitted a roller shutter door to it which has insulated it really well and I believe energy use is well down
