I was wondering if anyone had a picture of a male and female, I'm trying to sex the two I have. I have a sucspision that they both might be male, and that might be why they chase either around the tank :dunno: . But I wanted to know for sure. Thanks :D

Sorry, I tried google, but my computer is dumb and didn't like the search :/
You can post this in the gourami section, and I bet you'll find better help there...

Generally Males have longer trailing tale fins, more pointed. The females have more of a rounded shorter tail without the trailing fins.

Chasing is fairly common with paradise fish, they really need the same kinda requirements as a Betta, although a bit more space as they are larger. If you want to keep males and females together its best to do so in a planted tank, ideally with 3/1 Fem/Male Ratio.

Thanks for all the help. I do have two males. The so that might be why they chase each other around the tank. It's a 55 g tank, and it has some ornamints and plants in it. Do you think they will both be ok. Right n ow, the bigger male keeps picking on the smaller one. Is there anything I can do for the smaller one, other than switching tanks, as I only have one and can't afford another atm. Thanks again :D

Generally its better to keep either one paradise fish, or a group of them, i.e. 5-6.

If the 55G is fairly empty, maybe get another 3, if not, take the aggressor or the reciever back to your LFS?

We had two Paradise fish in our community tank (at the advice of a not to great garden centre/fish shop.. when we first started in the hobby.. therefore didn't realise that most lfs are not to be trusted...) one male (larger fish with longer tail) and one female (shorter, more round looking with a much shorter tail).

The male was a nightmare  he chased the female until she died :byebye: , then started on the rest of the fish in our tank, going so far as to eat the fins off our four stunning angel fish one by one during the night.

In the begining we didn't know who was literally eating the angels alive it only happened when no-one was around - we had our suspicions, but we were convinced by the guy we bought it from that it was "perfect community tank fish", and that it was the two golden gouramis that were also in the tank (they kindly took those off us .. free of charge!)

we've finally got the internet at home, and found that a lot of websites refer to the the paradise fish as NOT SUITABLE FOR COMMUNITY TANKS!! and that they are renowned for chewing angels, and other long finned fish, in competion for the middle-top part of the tank!!

we can completely understand why you chose these fish.. probably for the same reason as us.. they are beautiful! but i hope our advise will help save you some heart ache! -_-
