Buddies, does a male Betta need live or frozen feed? I can't feed them live or frozen (as it is not available here). I can only feed them Tetra bits or Freeze fried bloodworms. Can Bettas live healthily on Tetra bits (with Discuss fish photo on them) and freeze dried bloodworms (given to them after soaking)?

They do fine with freeze dried BW. In fact, some live foods carry disease and should be avoided. Try to get him some pellets made especially for bettas though as they need more protein than some fish.

You can get a product (certainly in the UK) called Tetra Betta which is a flake food with bits of shrimp and other yummy stuff in it (except that my betta doesn't like it - the corys do though!). I do give mine frozen bloodworms but he has freeze dried too on occasion.

freeze-dried bloodworm has pretty much no nutritional value to it and should only be fed as a treat.

Buddies, the issue is ... can a Betta live healthily without live food?

Well, yes. I mean, I'm sure every fish would like live foods. I, personally, don't like to feed live food unless it is cultured by myself - take something like, eh, mosquito larvae, you find them outside in dirty water and you just don't know what they live in.. I feel nervous feeding them. If you have doubts I would still to specially made betta pellets, I use Topfin and all my bettas like them.. but I also feed frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Which is every other day, so I guess they figure. "eat the pellets, we'll get back at her by jumping and clamping onto her hand tommorow. :grr: "

OH YEAH...they can live with the dried blood worms, but the blood worms have a lot of protein in it..i think about 50%-65% fat inside of those blood worms...your betta should get really big in no time...thats why i even it out with pellets made from Hikari and Hikari Blood Worms...i suggest you to get these products because they say these are the best! :good:

it depends on the fish what they will and will not eat. I have a male that will not eat frozen or freeze dried food so he gets pellets and frist bites (hes really small)
other then that no they do no need live food they prefer it by all means but can live long healthy happy lives without it.

depending on the size of your fish you can also give him a small guppy or other feeder (not goldfish) to eat my guys love that. its given only as a rare treat though

then I dont feed them for a day or so

maybe my fishes are spoiled??
