Size of tank doesn't matter. The fish is still going to emit waste and cause ammonia. For a single betta in a 2.5G I wouldn't expect a very high spike. If you can cycle it fishless do it shouldn't take long. If you can't and you've already bought the betta just watch it closely. It's still going to cycle on you size is not a factor all tanks need to cycle in some fashion
