Do you use Stress Zyme?

Do you use live bacteria or any other live bacteria to enhance biological filtration?

My lfs swear by it, but I've heard a lot of people say it is worthless.

Edit: I just realised that this post's question says "Do you use live bacteria or any other live bacteria to enhance biological filtration?"

I meant to say "Do you use Stress Zyme or any other... " Sorry!

I've tried Cycle and A.C.T. (Aquatic Culture Treatment) and they both were worthless. I've tried Bio-Spira and found it to be junk as well. Though many people have had success with it. Maybe I just didn't get lucky with the batch I got :dunno:

Nope. I use... time.

6 weeks on a new tank. 6 weeks min between additions to the tank. As few new fish at a time as possible.

I use stress zyme.

When I didn't know what I was doing and set up the tank by the lfs instruction  I was told to set up my tank with everything in it and running and put stress zyme in as per instructions and leave it for 4+ weeks before adding fish.

I lost no coldwater fish (when I set my 35UK as a c/w a year ago) and only a couple of tropical fish using this method.

I hate to think what would have happened if I had not added the stress zyme!

I think there is another product on the market that I have heard good things about called Bio-spira (or something similar) but I have never seen it in my lfs.

If you mean to cycle the tank then no, I find that using established filter media from another tank is just as effective - sometimes more effective.

If you mean on a regular basis then no, because my tanks are already cycled, why would I waste my money? :)

All the miracle bacteria in a bottle treatments are next to worthless, the bacteria has been put into suspended animation and only a very specific set of water parameters will bring them out of it, unless your water meets these specific values then you may as well just be adding water to the tank. There is only three ways to cycle a new tank IMO, the fishless way, the with fish way or the using ready matured filter media from a established tank way.

I just think its another product that companies wanna get our hard earned cash
from

As if you don't have to spend enough cash on starting up etc etc!!!

I meant to keep your water clear, etc. not to cycle the tank. I bought some a couple years ago, and it's almost gone. I just wasn't sure whether to buy some more or not :/

From what it sounds like, a lot of you say it is useless, but the poll suggests otherwise :sly: Anyway, I've decided not to buy any more Stress Zyme.

I think you needed to be wayyyy more specific with your poll. I would hazard a guess that if you had stated the above in your original question, you would have much more negative results... I've never heard of it being useful for that purpose in fact... The only thing I add regularly is a dechlorination agent, when I change water.

I don't know if we have bio-spira here in Canada but i used the Nutrafin Cycle. So from what i read on this topic all this bacteria in the bottle is useless, then how does the beneficial bacteria appears on your tank if you first set it up without using any filter or materials from an establish tank?

Bacteria will colonise by chance. It's pretty difficult to stop bacteria colonising and multiplying in places where there are abundant nutrients... like in your aquarium when it's full of ammonia, or nitrite, etc...

I used Bio-Spira by Marineland and it worked like a charm, i sent about a week researching this product and scanning forums for peoples responses and 95% said it works like a charm.

It worked like a charm for me as well, i lost no fish and it has been 2 months and i have some sensitive fish like clown loaches. But now that i have a cycled tank i will use the aged filter method to cycle the rest of my tanks.
