Do They Only Sell Male Bn Plecos?

One of my local chain fish shops always gets a bunch of female BN pleco about 1.5 - 2" big. One batch I saw some had bristles. I have never seen any with bristles since then. They get all theses females in and sell them as Common plecos.

This got me wondering. Do the big fish farms only sell male BN out to stores? Then the poor females get sold to other stores as random common plecos? Could this be? Or am I just over thinking it.

their to small to sex at 2" they mature at around 18 months and 4" in size
some males do develop smaller but their not the best of fish at that size.
