Hi All

My heart is going out to the tiny cream colored rescue girl I got yesterday. She really doesn't move, just floats at the top of her isolation jar. It is near the boys (because the undercabinet lights help keep the jar warm) They are going nuts trying to flirt with her and she is not even reacting to seeing them. Her fins are still clamped (I don't see any signs of fungus or anything) My daughter named her Cinderella.

Do they make prozac or any tranquilizer for Bettas? Do you think she is traumatized for life or will she get over being picked on by giant silver fish for who knows how long?

Sounds like internal parasites. Is her poop white and stringy?

Shine a flashlight on her, and see if she has anything on her scales.

that seems normal for a female betta. they always do that, atleast the female bettas i got. they stop after about three or four days.

She has not eaten or pooped since I got her. I am guessing she did not get much to eat at the lfs. I found her cowering under a leaf in a tank filled with some big silver fish (V shaped tails...don't know what they were).

I was treating with melafix (for chewed up tail), aquarium salt and karamycin (antibiotic just in case).

What are signs for internal parasites? (If you can't evaluate poop)

Mine also didn't eat (she was picked on by goldfish, though!) at first, but now she is a fiesty little thing.

Give her a week, I am sure she will perk up. Smash her pellets to make powder, that is the only way I could get mine to eat (either she was used to goldfish flakes or her mouth was too small).

you know mine is the opposite she is too happy i want to get betta ritalin and a betta strait jacket

Well...
if that fish was mine, here's what I would do.

I'd give her a 100% water change and completely skip the melafix.
I'd give her just clean dechlorinated water. Then keep her in a quiet, dim place with a nice soft little plant for her to lay on. Offer her food daily but keep her out of sight of all other bettas and give her a few days of nice peace, quiet and relaxation. Offer her food every day and keep the light low around her.

She'll come around, and if she doesn't - it means she's got an illness, which might show itself before then anyway. Watch for ick, fungus, dark grey spots, ripped fins, swollen belly, etc. Her clampy fins should come undone as each day goes by.

I really think she was mentally scarred by those freaks at the fish store and may just need some vacation time to herself to come around. :)

my betta female did that forever (about 4 days) until she finally ate. Shes fine now, shes even building bubble nests!!!, although she stil has stress lines :dunno:
