Do people keep fish like this?

Its not a joke or a fake; because the pet industry has so graciously exploited the bettas hardiness and ability to live in small spaces, we now have all kinds of little mini designed tanks to imprison them in for short, miserable lives.
-_-
Hopefully it will one day change; keeping a dog on a 3 foot chain in your back yard used to be socially acceptable, as was keeping parakeets in cages not even fit for a finch. I can only hope that the betta fad will slowly die down as uneducated betta owners get bored of their fish passing away on a weekly basis.

Because, everyone sympathizes much more with the horror of living with that freaking stupid yellow sponge of course.

I complain about the betta barraks, but no one listens to me because apparently I'm some kind of radical animal rights freak for suggesting that the minimum should only be the conditions if there is nothing better to offer. Crazy me...

One of the lfs's around my area used to have a betta in one of those, at the counter. Saw him there for a while, he disappeared after a few weeks. -_-

Yeah, ive seen em too. Its realy ****.

But i agree, whats the difference between that and a betta barracks, and some of the small containers i see them in when i look at some of the betta keepers fish tanks. I dont think keeping them in a plain container is very nice either.

That..... thing...... is so cruel. :-( Not to mention f-ugly.

I feel so sorry for the poor bettas that have to live in that kind of conditions. Can you imagine how boring it would be for the poor little guy?

Barracks are different 'cause they have filtration and sometimes heating. I don't particularly like them, but if you're breeding hundreds of bettas you can't exactly maintain 500 filtered, decorated and heated tanks.

Barracks aren't a permenant home either and they are connected to a sump so they are kept pristine and heated. Most people keep good size containers in their barracks as well

I personally don't have barracks because the disease factor freaks me out too bad, but I have looked into it because of water change lack there of ;) Mine all live in unfiltered tanks, but they are in a tempersture controlled environment and they all get 100% water changes 3 times a week and they eat better then I do so i don't see room to complain :p

IMO breeders are a different matter. Some keep them in barracks, some in beanie boxes, but TBH they still have more room in a beanie box than in that. Especially as the betta has to live all their short life in the SBSP pineapple and after the owner has probably added gravel, ornaments etc.... well, you might as well leave it in the cup :/

breeders will usually only keep the bettas in beanie boxes for a few weeks before they are sold. People who buy bettas to put them in a cup of water on a permanent basis should be shot
