My hood has no reflective panels on the back of either light compartments? If i get a couple of reflectores will it make much of a difference?

Ill probably get them anyway but i just wondered.....

Cheers!! :fish:

yes they can make a really big difference apparently.

cheaper alternative is to get some reflective tape and tape up the inside of the hood :good:

Absolutely!

Note also that the thinner tubes (the T5's etc of the world) are considered 'better' (watt for watt) because they allow more of the reflected light past them.

When anyone talks of 'lighting' of any given wattage it is assumed that this is for a light WITH a good reflector!

he he no problem,

just means i'm the saddest git who'se so bored they spend all day on here  ;)

The tapes quite a good idea. The reflectors on my juwel vision make the gap between the lights and the side of the tank smaller. That means I have to lift the whole lid off when I do a water change as I can't fit my arm in the gap. Depends on your tank of course. Make a lot of difference to the brightness of the tank though. You can try out the effect by temporarily placing some tin foil over the light unit.

Yes they do work in my case. I only have a 15w bulb and a reflector and the occasional bag of plant food for my plants and they are lush!!!

I ve use tinfoil in the past, and basically wall papered the inside of the hood. Which worked very well, better than the reflectors i have since
bought in my opinion. But it does peel off after a yr or so and needs to be replaced. But def much cheaper.
Tim.

I added tin foil to the hood of my Rio juwel like DRtim. Works ok and is very cost effective.

I was please with the results. Some people say tin foil scatters the light to much but its better than nothing.
