Do Kuhli Loaches Need Sand?

Ive heard that sand is reccomended, but is it neccessary. I just want to hear some opinions.

I've been keeping them for almost 2 years now some in a tank with no sand and some in a tank without sand,no difference that i've seen.So,no they don't need sand,tho the ones in the sandy tank sift thro the sand for food,sucking it in their mouths and blowing it out their gills,kinda neat to watch...
