What is the best sponge to get for bio growth? I have a feeling I'm going home to either a healthier fish or a dead or nearly dead one. (Betta, only fish in tnk). If either of the latter I'm taking him out of a perfectly cycled tank he was in for a week and starting over. Not knowing for sure what's wrong (if bacterial) before I get a new betta I am going to clean everything and start the cycle again. Do I need a new filter sponge? If so, what's the best for bacterial growth?

Hmmm . . . an interesting question. I assume the Betta is dying and you think his body will contaminate the tank. You shouldn't need a new sponge filter if it wasn't something really bad disease wise. Just run it in mild salt water for a few days and go again. Any sponge filter is good. I don't think any one or other is better or best but I'm a little skeptical of the super fine pore type. I prefer a coarser sponge material.

Not a sponge filter. The sponge in a mechanical filter. But yes. Worried about contamination of a new tank. I'll see @outofwater if they have that smaller. I only have 2 5 gallon tanks. And with the hob filter already have pretty filter and outflow sponge and a small outflow sponge for the one in question (although that will probably need replacing too.)
