I have a freshwater aquarium

My tank is a corner tank and is deeper than it is in width or length so requires very good filtering.

For years i have been using a Fluval 2 underwater filter together with an Under Gravel Filter but just recently the airpump for the UGF has packed in so I have removed the UGF from my tank

I am now wondering if I need to replace the UGF or will the Fluval 2 manage by itself?

While I'm here I also have another couple of questions:

1- I have noticed green bits on the side of my tank (i presume this is green algea?).. if I introduce a fish that eats algea will it stop this from happening? or will i just have to continue cleaning the green bits off like I am doing at the moment?

2- I have also noticed dirt gathering in the gravel.. I initially thought the UGF would stop this from happening but it wasn't very effective at doing this when it was working! is the only way to combat this regular gravel cleaning or is there something else i can do?

Thanks in advance

Loll

Theres a simpler way to put that....

I have a freshwater corner tank that is more or less triangular.. it is 16" in length, 16" in width and 23" in height so that would mean 25.49 US gallons or 21.22 UK gallons if it was square or rectangular shaped.

As it is a corner (triangular) aquarium it will be more or less half the above calculation (ie. around 13 US gallons) but there is also a bit that sticks out at the front to stop it being completely triangular so I would add an extra couple of gallons on to that so we're looking at roughly 15 US gallons or around 12/13 UK gallons

So basically what I want to know is will a Fluval 2 Underwater Filter be suitable for a 15 US gallon tank that is 23" deep?

Yes it will deal with 24gal.

what has the depth to do with it or am i missing something?

finally can you send me some of whatever you are smoking? lol :D :D :D

lol... have been told that the deeper the tank the more filtering required but have no idea if thats true

What i really want to know is will i notice more dirt gathering in the gravel now i'm no longer using the UGF?

My understanding was that the UGF kept the gravel clean... is that right or am I way off the mark?

I think the depth issue relates more to the availability of light to plants, not filtration. As the depth of the tank increases, the amount of light reaching the lower levels of the tank decreases, rather quickly, given that the amount of light input is unchanged. The upshot of this is that as a tank gets deeper more intense light is needed for a planted tank.
Filtration is simply a factor of filter throughput.
