hi, i have noticed recently that 2 of my 3 otocinclus (when i get my shrimp tank set up they will go in there with another half a dozen friends) seem to have paired up. here is a pic of them.

do you think i have a male and a female here? and if so, how can i encourage them to spawn? they seem to have become a lot more active since i've started doing bigger cool water changes recently to try to get my corys to spawn.

cheers :good:

The one of the left defiantly looks quite plump so it could be a female filled with eggs.

They will need a rich varied diet and some nice cool water changes. I just did a little bit of reading and like cory they spawn using the T position but they tend to keep there eggs quite close together on plants or glass instead of scattering them everywhere like corys.

hi, thanks for the info. i'll give them some veggies tomorrow to go with their usual catfish tablets, algae and algae wafers. and i do a cool 50% WC every saturday, so i'll hope for the best. the only prob is that they are in my community tank, so would i be able to hatch eggs in a container like with cory eggs, or not?

cheers :good:

They breed quite similarly to cories, so if you do the basics (cold water changes, lower water lever (I think), feeding live foods daily), they should breed pretty quickly :good:

Sorry to intrude but I recently bought a Otocinclus pair and I'm finding it hard to conceive how they would feed on anything but algae on the aquarium glass. Do you have to place the algae wafers/pellets right in front of their eyes to entice them?

I don't have Common Otos, I have some similar unknown 'Black Otos' but they are pretty similar. I just stick an algae wafer onto the side of the aquarium and they start eating it
