Reason I ask is he goes pale when hes sat on the sand (orangey/goldy colour) and wehn hes on the bogwood he goes a darker chocolately colour.

Supposedly you can tell what type of environment your pleco was bred in because of the darkness of their skin. The darker they are the deeper and murkier water they were bred in. The lighter they are the shallower and clearer water they are in.
Thanks everyone for comments. I'ts just when I see him on the bog wood he blends right in you wouldn't see him if you didn't know he was there. His spot is located under a big java fern and he appears much lighter there, like he was stressed or something. He's not keen on me or the other fish really. Hope he's not unhappy.
Many (if not all) plecs will change colour to blend in - the most dramatic I've seen are our Pitbulls, they can go from beige (really pale) to nearly black in a few seconds.
Even common plecs do it - ours is normally dark brown but goes the colour in my signature
