Hi all,

I am thinking of adding some apple snails to my betta tanks, so the little guys can have some company. I was going to put one in my 5 Gallon and one on each side of my 10G. Do they add much to the waste? I don't have filters running, the boys don't like the way the water moves when I put one in. I am doing daily water changes (10-20%).

Is adding the snails a good idea?

hmm... now you've said that... I put a small (baby) apple snail in with frank (our veil tail) and hevent seen it for ages.

hi ive got snails in most of my betta tanks but snails do make alot of mess

I really don't reccomend it. Snails produce a ton of waste, but more importantly, they produce a ton of bacteria. Bettas have such sensitive skin that I think it is just asking for a problem. I had a golden apple snail in a filtered 5 gallon with my betta for just over a month. Not only did I have to clean the tank several times a week to keep up with all the snail poop, but she did very little for the algae, and the betta kept getting fin rot. I'm convinced it was because of that dirty little snail mucking up his water quality.

Thanks for the advice. I will not add snails to their tank. I think I will get some for my 20G though, it seems a little bare.

i had a small pest snail in with 1 of my bettas and every now and then i'd hear a crunching noise

and i had 2 mystery snails in my 32G female tank and they would try and eat them :sly:

i just put in some sails with my divided male tank to keep down alge and so far no problems. i have had small snails eaten by bettas before but userally only happend when the bettas in a craped space (say 1g) and really borded or really hungry. at first when i added mine the bettas were curious but after awhile they juts became part of teh sceanery, no snail eating here.

a crunching noise? Is that the betta eating the snail? If so, powerful jaws..

Bettas have mean little shark bites. Just when you thought it was safe to put your hand in the tank.... *hums Jaws theme*
