Do bettas fight before they spawn?

This morning I took the female out of the glass tube in with the male in the spawning tank. The male started to swim around for awhile then he just started to bite her face etc. After I saw this I took her out, so he didnt kill her. Is this normal? Should I have kept her in there?

It really depends on your male. You did the right thing by seperating them. Try again in a few days. He may cool off by then, sometimes the boys get overexcited
