ive heard between 7-8 is what is found in the sea but some people go up to tweleve, why and do i have to raise it? i do not want to waste buffer for the sake of it lol

The main problem with low kh is that below 6 (that number might be wrong) coralline algae is unable to grow. I know many people who will not allow their kh below 12, and those who believe that kh is actually more important than pH. That being said, I'm not sure exactly what advice to give you, since that's basically the extent of my knowledge :p

so will a higher kh increase the health of my sps lps? keep in mind i have fish and softies would these be affected at such a high level?

i think a higher kH (i.e. 10+) will benefit SPS, and to a lesser extent LPS, as they will grow quicker due to a harder water which i presume they need along with a good level of calcium in order to grow their skeletons.
Fish and softies on the other hand dopn't need these high levels so i would assume a level of 7-8 would be fine for them.

i have real trouble with corraline growing too quickly even though i struggle to keep my kH up (typically i add buffer every week at the moment to keep it at around 9.
