Ok. I've got pregnant livebearers. I've got a 5 gallon which my molly is in and the platties will later be going in.
Anyway. I want to leave the other little fishies in there cause they're to small to put in my 40g. But they'll eat my fry.
The obvious answer for a tank seperator, DIY style would be a fitting peice of acrylic or something. But my heater's the length of my 5g so I can't put a sheet of something without having the heater sticking out, which will blow it up.
How can I securely seperate the sides of my tank, when the time comes, which isn't that far away I don't think.
I wanna keep as many fry as poss you see.
thankyou to anyone that can help :D

ther is some stuff that u can by and cut to size and drill heaps of little holes in it, i was gunna do the same myself earlier but never got around to it but unfortunely ive forgetton the name of it. I got the name of it from my lfs maybe u could ask yours if no else answers this

Why don't you just go to your local walmart or petco and pickup a tank divider. Costs around $10. Now your heater is going to be a problems cuz you don't want to remove it, you don't want to cut the hole for the heater too big, and you don't want anything touching the heater. I would just remove it and find some other way to heat.

What is another way to heat??? I can't think of any.
I live in New Zealand. It's winter and it's freezing. The only other way would be to add hot water every 10 minutes and that's not gonna happen
I could get a smaller heater. But can't afford that. I might have to divide it on an angle or long ways.
If I buy one of these tank seperators, does the heat go from one side to the other. LIke is my fry's side going to get cold?
And what are they made of????

Unless the tank divider is very thick AND non heat conductive, it doesn't matter that much if the heater is in one side. You can, of course, get tank dividers with small holes in them which will allow the water to circulate better.
