Im thinking about making a box filter for a plastic storage box that im planning to set up for fry to "grow out" in, any ideas for what to use for the canister? ive used fish food tubs for small tanks but im wondering about something larger.
If i use a drinks bottle, cut the top off, half fill it with gravel, use a sponge to fill the rest of it, with a pipe down the middle, an airline with an airstone on the end work?

that should work just fine. other things to consider- large yogurt containers, cottage cheese container, a cool whip container. really, anything plastic with a lid.
good luck!
cheers

Yay lol, just had a thought would a clip lock tub work in some way for a filter? i found a site for a canister filter
How do canister filters work? or are they the same as external ones?

Oh that looks good and do-able.
I dont know how Canister filters work, sorry.

Ps. you might want to remove the link, Trust me, you dont want to be on Mods Preview. :good:

Edit: looking at it just now, i think i might make that for my shrimp tank. Where do you buy those containers from  ?

Edir again: on 2nd thoughts maybe not, it looks too difficult.

Ah yeah good point didnt realise it was a forum, do they go outside the tank?
I dunno whered you get them from but i know tesco and wilkinsons sell them.

Hmm ok thanx, does this one look any good? http://www.petdiscounters.com/c213/501-External-Turtle-Filter-p1452.html

Ok thanx was thinking about mb getting it cos its for very small tanks and isnt too badly priced.

I have two filters that look a lot like the one in the advert and mine are terrible. They worked OK at first and did a nice job the first year but after that they are impossible to clean and get started again. There is no good way to prime them and the ones that I got cannot be taken apart to clean the impeller. What that means is that once the impeller gets dirty you are done using that filter forever. So far only one of mine has reached that stage, the other runs with a sponge prefilter for fry protection on it and it seems to be protecting the impeller too. This is the prefilter in place on the inlet tube.

I would get more information on that thing before jumping into buying it. I have lots of nice canister filters but cannot say the one that looks like that one is worth anything for the long term.
