Slate is a pretty versatile material, because it is strong, yet thin, it is suitable for many "construction" projects. Chemically it is neutral, and suitable. The one thing to watch is that it can have very sharp edges which should be filed off.

Not only is that a lovely cave, but a beautiful fish as well.

Where did you find the slate?

I made a trip to Home Depot yesterday only to find out they don't carry any natural rock. It's all fabricated.

Edit - Looks great! I hope to have some slate formations myself soon.

Your slate cave has inspired me, I have some slat in the back yard. Would it be ok to use if I cleaned it with really hot water & scrubbed it well?
I also admire your fish!

I prefer basalt for caves, it has a super-dull color that goes nicely with tropical fish and plants. It's quite something to see a miniscule, brightly colored cherry barb swimming around a bunch of basalt pebbles with java moss growing on them.

Slate is nice for the tops of caves, but I prefer something thicker. I like my caves chunky and primitive-looking; more like piles of rocks than actual caves.
