Fish Fanatic
I was getting sick of the film build up on the surface of my water. I remember seeing a similar product in my LFS which attached to the intake of a canister filter and had a skimmer.
Well, they no longer sold it and I had parts to make one myself.
What you will need is
1. 1-2Ft of C-PVC or PVC, size? depending on the diameter of your intake for your filter.
2. One Tee, one 90 degree elbow, and a 1/2" to 3/4" reducer (or whatever size pipe you use to the next size up.
3. Hacksaw(preferably a coping saw makes the detail cuts easier.) with a fine tooth blade.
Everything is prettey much self explanitory in the picture.
The skimmer you will need to cut little slits in it to skim the surface but allow enough flow to prevent air from being sucked in, but not big enough for fish to get caught in.
If the water level drops below the skimmer it will still suck water but a reduced and intermittent rate. So if you leave for the weekend and the water level drops, you won't have to worry about dead fish. The filter will still run.
Drilling holes in the skimmer tube about 1/8" will prevent a lot of air being sucked in.
Reuse the strainer and push it onto the pipe.
I'm in the process of designing a skimmer that will float with the water level to prevent air being sucked in when the level drops bellow the skimmer.
