Hiya's,

Hopefully i've got the correct sub-forum to post this

This is phase 1 of my 6x2x2 tank project, phase 2 will be cladding it with wood, phase 3 will be a hood, phase 4 will be the lighting for the hood

Did take some "during the build" pics but they were all fuzzy, so not too many but you get the idea so far

I did manage to get all corners ground down and all tack welds too, gotta get some weld angles (triangles) cut and welded in then i'll seem all the welds and jobs a good un

The top and bottom will be clad in either exterior ply or mdf (can't seem to find blockboard nowadays locally) this will spread the load

Also i will have to get some more top/bottom braces, more the merrier i feel

Will post as/when i have something to update ;)

(ohh i'm used to mig welding, not done much arc welding before but i'm getting there lol

Have Fun

Tony

It is coming along very nicely Tony. Be sure you grind the welds smooth with the tubing before you8 add any of the wood members to it. You don't want any stress points under the tank itself. I would think a single diagonal brace fron to backk and one side to side would be enough fo that stand. It would not be needed at all if you are attaching plywood facings to the stand. The plywood is amazingly strong under torque type forces.

Hiya OM47

Yeah you're correct

And as luck would have it i think i have enough box section to do as you suggest

Welded many things from car chassis to car wings n sills to garden gates etc etc but this is my first attempt at a stand, really enjoyed doing it as i find amongst other things welding relaxes me and i love to make rather than buy

The wood cladding looks like being hardwood ply stained in mahog then plenty of coats of danish oil, was hoping for some oak off a friend as i have some oak doors handy but unless i wait i'll revert to pine and stain/danish oil them (pine doors done neat look fine stained in mahog)

Will be screwing on the cladding from the inside so no pesky screw holes to fill and spoil the wood, gonna clean and paint the stand in red oxide, i feel rather than a white or black/silver steel stand the red oxide will be less garish to see when doors are opened as the interior will be stained/oiled too

Yeah all tack welds are ground, didn't have any time left to take pics after i did them, then as per norm i'll grind a nice welding V and offski i go, don't worry luckily i have a 7ft long length of flat 4in x 1in aluminium i use for straight checking lol, when i'm done the stands gonna be as smooth as a you know what

Moms birthday tomorrow so won't get anything donw, but i'm off next week so monday i might get to weld the braces on you suggest

you sould really of used angle for the top, then you could of sat wood in it and drilled in to the angle .

Coming along nice though, id do full welds on the boxes, also dont down hand any welds, peneration is weakest on down hands

Hiya,

Yeah the open ended box sections will be plated up

Just got it tack welded for now as it was a nice day

For the seems i'm gonna take it to the workshop so i can turn it as needed for seeming

Ahh, now you've mentioned angle, i could get some, makes sense as you say

Cheers

Tony
