My male krib has got a torn fin due to the fact the female is being a little aggressive because shes had babies so i wanted to make some DIY melafix to help him out and i need advice on how to make it and is it worth using.

How i should dose do i add it to my tank or bath him separate it would be easier if i could just add it to the tank

Thanks guys

If its just a small tear, then I wouldnt add anything, do some extra water changes and the clean water will clear it up in no time.

its a chunk of his fin thats been bit out

Infact heres a pic dunno if you can quite make it out but anyway here ya go

That's not too bad really...you'd be surprised at how quickly these things heal with just a bit of extra water changing.

Testing each others strength most probably. If the male can handle it then his genes are good enough for the kids.

About the DIY melafix, I've heard some people make it (it is after all something like 1% tea tree oil 98% water with stuff that makes water mix with oil). I've heard you can make your own using just distilled water and tea tree oil but the problem is getting the stuff to blend, which means vigarous shaking for a long time.
THIS page tells you abit more (even gives melafix patent number).

Hi MrWhite :)

Here's my recipe for what I call Melafake. To make it, mix 1/4 tsp. 100% pure tea tree oil with 8 TBS. dechlorinated water. Shake very well and use it as you would MelaFix. Shake well again before each use.

Pure tea tree oil is a very light, thin substance which will mix with water, if well shaken. When Melafake is added to water intended for use as part of a water change the force of the water coming out of the tap will further agitate it and mix it with the water. It will then mix with the tank water the same way MelaFix does.
