I have a Magna-float for my tank, but it is one size too small, and doesn't really do the job properly. The next size is $50, and I really can't justify spending that much on a magnet.

Is it possible to make one? Find a strong magnet and fix some velcro to it? (I don't really care if it actually floats)

Any thoughts?

just do what we do when ya doing water changed get the rough side of a sponge on the job.....

If you need to do it more than once a week you have way to much algae growth

I have lots of hard green spot algae in there. LOTS. I'm pretty sure its a nitrate deficiency right now as I have been slacking on my fertalization recently. I'm scraping and using the magnet on the front and sides of the tank, and not much is happening. I get in there and scrape practically with my fingernail and a scraper and i get i some off, but more shows up.

I do have an old harddrive waiting to do to the dump.... I should see if I can tear it apart and take a gander as to what is in there.

also, be very careful with these magnets, they're rare earth and will snap together with a lot of force. Can take the top of your finger off if you don't take care! Also they are very fragile, if you snap them together with too much force they can break quite easily.

I have loads of old hard drive magnets here, but I wouldn't really want to use them on a tank as I think they'd be too powerful and as they snap together with a lot of force you'd risk damaging the tank.

Just an indication of their power, I can manipulate a magnet on my desk with another underneath quite easily, and the desk is one inch thick!

a couple of images to help you identify them.

Note that this one has a metal cage as part of its construction.

This one is broken, showing that they can be easily damaged.

I was debating doing this myself, although in my case I want a smaller scraper to fit in crevices in and around my rocks. Was thinkin about epoxying it all together. I'll be watching this thread with some interest :D

I have yet to get one of these but tons of people on N-R.com have them and they take coraline algae off the glass!

There is a super strong one.

I am sure that he would be willing to make one as big as you want since each one is custom made.
