I found this DIY hood article on plantedtank.com, im currently having it underconstruction and i will end up saving about $40. Plus the wooden look always beats that cheap plastic hood look.

I'm actually going to be building one this weekend for my 40 gallon.. The one we built for the 55 gallon was DIY, always looks better when you do it yourself.
