it needs to be "open cell foam". check out upholstery stores and you can find it a lot cheaper than buying "aquarium" type foam. (it is the same stuff used to make cushions for furniture). regular old kitchen sponges are no go. you could always make a canister type sponge filter out of old fish food containers, etc and use gravel, filter floss etc., as you media...if you need assistance in making this type (very cheap and you most likely have the stuff lying around already), feel free to pm me.

its mainly the filter floss i want to make my own coz the others i can give them a good wash (tank water)

Aye, that would work. I use the Koi filter matting that work stocks for it. It's not far off that price for a similar sized sheet

No, it's some koi filter brand beginning with K who's name I forget. Comes in two layers also, one fine one thick, so it does not clogg as fast as normal Floss
