The only way I could think of would be a series of stacked boxes containing filter media, with a hole in each box to let water drain down, the bottom box would contain a submersible pump to pump the water back into the tank and the feed would be a syphon set with the inlet pipe set just under the surface. The bottom filter box would have to hold enough water so that if the pump failed there would be enough capacity to hold enough water to stop the syphon

You could match the flows by the use of an adjustable clip on the return hose

If you try this out and have a disaster, I disclaim any responsibility for any damage or loss

Same concept as a sump but on a smaller scale and you would use chemical medias, sponges or whatever you prefer and some pump that circulates all the water within and some pvc pipping to draw water into the sump and out to the tank. This is far cheaper than buying a very expensive filter like a Fluval FX5. People need to get creative when they want filtration for very large tanks.

large plastic barrel, pond pump to pump water in and another to pump it out, 2x bulkhead fittings and two lengths of hose and fill the thing with bio balls.......
