A few months ago I built a lid for my friend's tank, I was extremely proud of myself  but apparently pride comes before a fall cos now it's got lots of black mould on it. :(

Why would this happen!? I gave it four coats fo weatherproof varnish! Do you think if I sanded it down and varnished it again only better, it would stop growing? Is the mould harmful to the fish?

If anyone has and tips/advice on how tehy waterproofed their DIY lids (cos I know some of you have made them...) I would be very grateful.

you will always get mould especially in a damp area. I get it periodically above my marine tank (which is open topped) so I'v now fitted an extractor fan which seems to have solved the problem. try ventelating the hood. you can get the normal push in vents from B&Q I think. all you need to do is cut a hole with the hole saw and glue one of these in. even better would be a couple of computer fans.

good luck

ste :)
