Hi,

I'm new to all this and getting a little lost! I've been advised to get a pressurised CO2 system that switches off at night but can't afford it! Currently I have a yeast-based one.

Should I make my own yeast solution or upgrade and make my own pressurised system?

I'm a bit scared to use a fire extinguisher but have seen on here that some people use welding CO2 canisters. I've also see the Luna pet solenoid (Found here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140549133486&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2650wt_1141 )

What else would I need? How do I fit it together and how do I know everything will fit and be the right thread? Where do I get parts from?

Sorry for all the silly questions and thanks for the help!

Have a look here.

I have DIY Co2 and it's not perfect. Its not as consistant or strong as pressurized. I think if you are just getting into plants and just learing about CO2. Then DIY is the way to go. You don't have to invest much money into it. It's really easy to set up and kind of fun. Once you have had it runing then look into investing in Pressurized CO2 system. I think DIY is the perfect way to learn and understand injecting CO2 before you invest in a big system.

I've just put together the FE Co2 myself, its very very easy. I got the luna pet solenoid and regulator with needle valve and a 2kg FE off eBay. It all fits together fine but you do need to snip the two pin plug off the solenoid and replace it with a standard Uk plug, very easy to do, it has the same coloured wires. all i used after that was some JBL black Co2 tubing, a 1 way check valve and a reactor/ladder to go into the tank. Job done, for a price of around £120.

Regulator + Needle Valve

£45.40

Solenoid Valve

£20.90

2kg Fire Extinguisher

£20.95

JBL Reactor/Diffuser

£25

JBL Check Valve

£5

You will also need a couple of drop checkers, or perhaps 1, depending on the size of your tank, they are about £10 and a mains timer switch, which again is pretty cheap.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for the info and links tizer. I may be looking into an FE set up very soon.

No worries!

Everything there screws together nicely, no need to over tighten anything and it feels perfectly safe. I taped down the handle with some selotape and i've left a stanley knife inside the cupboard in case theres a problem and it needs cutting to close the valve.

I'll probably hammer a piece of aluminium pipe into shape so it will slide over the closed handles eventually.

I cant see anything knocking the canister over either, only me when i clean the filter :D The tank is pretty solid, so im going to make a lock on the door so no visiting kids can fiddle.

Keep us posted in your tank thread how the FE setup gets on mate.

Cheers for the info :)

Replacing the plug should be no problem at all

Could I replace the FE with a welding CO2 cannister or are these no better? I'd have to hide this down the side of the sofa and a FE might be too big.

Thanks again!

Hi guys,

I've spoken to the seller of the solenoid. If you want to buy a complete system without using a FE here is a link to the complete setup he sells:

Aye its a good price, its only 500g canister though, FEs are 2kg, less hastle filling up when needed.
