hi all i am grounded this weekend so i decided that i am goin to make a diy co2 but i am confused see i am using this diagram and i am making a seperator so my airline does not get clogged here is thhe diagram see what i am cofused about is the seporator would i leave it empty or do i fill it with somthing.also see in the little bottle it says to use rigid tubing what does that mean they say that for the bit of long tubing in side the bottle

No clue, DIY isn't my forte, or more likely, I'm too lazy to bother trying. A nice cheap CO2 system is the Nutrafin CO2 system by Hagen. You can buy from most online vendors for like $21 at US vendors, or do a quick search on eBay to find a used system. It is an easy system and works very well. Have a read of the pinned topic about it in this section.

If I had to guess, based on looking at the diagram, I'd say leave it empty, as the 2lt bottle has shading suggesting that there is a liquid in it while the smaller bottle does not. I've been told that the flexible tubing needs to be resistant to CO2 gas, supposedly it's corrosive, but I'm no chemist and since the system I use comes with its own tubing...I don't give it much thought. Any thoughts on how you propose to diffuse the CO2 gas? This is for the 1WPG tank, I'm assuming? If it is, good call to supplement with CO2, you'll get better growth, but you won't really have to worry much about maintaining higher levels.

The picture you have there is showing a DIY cannister and bubble counter.

The small bottle on the right is supposed to be used as a bubble counter, but as it also stops the 'gunk' from entering the second pipe people have forgotten this and called it many other name : Overflow, seperator etc.

Fill the little bottle 3 quarters full so that the long hose is under water. Then the bubble will come out of the long pipe and you can then see it float through the water to the air where once the pressure is built up the CO2 will be forced down the next hose and into the diffusor.

DON'T follow the diagram and cable tie the small bottle to the large one because it then gets awkward to fill, clean etc.

See, it needs the little shading for liquid then! The diagram is inaccurate! :lol: Perhaps you should make a better diagram, Andy? It is unclear.

It's not my diagram. It's the first tie I've seen it! the link I've aded is to this site's original DIY setup, but you are right whoever drew it up has seen comments about the smaller bottle taking the residue of yeast setups and not known that it was actually suposed to be a bubble counter which people have discovered also doubles up as a residue catcher. lol (As will any pre-made or bought bubble counter.

I think would have to go along with calling the second bottle a separator. DIY CO2 production is so inconsistent/erratic that a bubble counter is of virtually no use. Also the release of the gas into the tank is uncontrollable. Therefore the second small bottle is in fact a safety apparatus to forestall any of the must winding up in the tank.

well i have my diy co2 setup now all i need now is to find a recipe i have senn tons on the web but they are all different what do i do also when i put the stuff in do i just put the dry ingrediants in and then add water and shake for a bit and can i use raw sugar
