I have a 2ltr dr pepper bottle, it has three indented rings on it, i have filled sugar up to the first indent, added a teaspoon of yeast and filled warm water up to the third indented ring. I have squeezed it to check for leaks and cant hear any hissing.

I can see a bit of froth at the top but am i right with the levels of mixture and how long til i should expect to see bubbles?

I have checked several threads on this but nothing really helps me!!

please help

I fill up with sugar to the 1st ring, water ( LUKE WARM ) up to the 3rd ring and half a teaspoon of yeast. Give it a little shake and within 1hr I get bubbles.

Sounds like you have a leak. What I do is get the bottle and fill with water. Attach the tubing as you would normally and hold your finger on the end of the air line tubing whilst standing on the bottle. Any leaks anywhere will be shown by water seaping out.

Hope this helps.

An answer for first timers like me. I set my system up with pop bottle, sugar, dry active yeast, and glass defuser. Not one bubble in a whole day, so I added more yeast, without result. Yesterday I chucked the lot and started again, but this time with fresh yeast from Sainsbury's bread department – millions of bubbles within a hour. So, beginners, check your yeast before panicking – not all “active” yeast is as active as they claim is...

Forgot to mention, I use Dried Active Yeast as I've heard others dont work as well. Works really well for me so sticking to it.
