Diy Box "canister" Style Filter?

I was looking round my uncles 150 gal (Which I'm getting!) and I found what looked like a plexiglass box in the base. It looked like it could hold around15-20 gal. I didn't get to see the mechanics, cause I couldn't really get it out and it was dark, but it had like a little white screen thing. I also saw a tiny overflow box on the top. Btw, the tank wasn't used so it was empty. A relative told me the box was the filter and that he had bio balls in there. The white thing was probably the tray. Anyone ever seen one of these or have experience with them?

Yes, sounds like you're describing parts of a sump filter system, the next bigger type of filter after external cannisters. You can google image to see pics of others probably and then begin reading up on them, there's lots out there.
