Hi Guys, was just thinking the other day,
What about a small pond just for one Betta?
What i was thinking was that during the summer time here (which starts december and ends Feburary) i would dig a decent sized whole in the garden and put a 5 gal (around that) in and cover it up so it looks all nice etc, add probably a thin layer of gravel at the bottom, add some nice Pond Plants and add a Betta in it?
It's cheap, easy and no harm done to any fish and the suppy of food would be big for the little guy as there are bugs everywhere and i would add a staple diet as well of flakes if needed.
So how does it sound?
Suggestions, comments? Anything apreciated

Sounds pretty cool, our Summers are warm enough too. :) Would you bring him inside in the other seasons?

You'd also have to make sure cats can't get in and munch on him.

Wuv - By that i meant put a mesh net type thing over it so my dog doesnt get into it and i would also put some rocks etc around it.

Splish - Yep, i would probably take him in during winter and autum and i'll see how spring goes.

Thanks guys :)

Ok, cool. :)

Just got the go ahead from my parents, aslong as i do it myself(which should be a breeze)

I'll make a step by step thread when summer comes :)

I'd give it a shot for sure.
Be careful to watch him closly for the first few days. That environment is going to be a pretty big change for him!

Someone on another thread just brought in their betta after having it outside for the summer. He was very colorful, was able to adjust to eating commercial foods again, and was quite feisty.

You'd probably have to change the water every day. 5 gallons will evaporate quickly in the summer sun. Make sure it's well shaded!

con771,

this is slightly off topic but that link in your footer, www.betafacts.com is great. All sorts of pertinent info!!!

No problem if the water evaporates, i do water changes every second or third day on 7 tanks so i'm fine with it :)

Yeah, Synirr and I were talking about her outdoor betta and how it looks better because it gets all that live food (ei mosquito larvae). That could be a really cool idea. I don't think I'd do it, I love looking at them too much, but I have thought about a hidden bucket of water left to collect mosquito larvae and feed my Miami fish. Of course no one can tell my mom, she'll have a fit. They would probably be an awesome conditioning food and really cheap. Go for it in the summer, I'd love to see the thread! :D

I would make sure no natural pond predators (cats) would be able to get into the pond and scoop out your betta...

Should be an interesting project. Look forward to seeing more on it. Be interesting to note changes in the betta's behaviors, eating patterns, color, growth and all of that. I know of a number of betta breeders that use smaller outdoor ponds (tubs, kiddie pools, the like) as their grow-outs. Seems to work quite well.
