Hi All

I have used distilled water on my tank with the hope I could but some Seachem Equilibrium. Unfortunately I couldn't. Using a sand bottom I had added SC Florish Tabs and Excel. Will the plants be ok? no fish doing a silent cycle.....

Are you asking if it’s ok to keeping using distilled water? I’m confused.

No problem! Definitely make sure to get that water de chlorinator as soon as you can. It’s much better than plain old distilled water. :good:

No excel if you are planning fish. Its poison. Flourish comprehensive supplement is all you need, along with the root tabs.

Oh really? Thanks very much for the info. I haven’t read about this yet!! It will be a couple weeks for my tank to cycle. If I stop dosing excel now and do a couple water changes then will it be ok?

So much to learn!!

All the "liquid carbon" supplements are gluteraldehyde. This is a powerful disinfectant used in hospitals for sterilising equipment (and in embalming fluid). The dosages are carefully calculated not to kill your fish too quickly - but if its in the water its in the fish and I won't use it.

While distilled water doesnt have chlorine in it still often has chloramine in it which is also harmful to fish. Be sure to use a dechlorinator with distilled water to get rid of chloramine.

I also stay away from Excel, flourish does a good job and is better for your fish. I use RO water for my soft water fish. I think it is better than distilled IMHO.

I used excel for a brief time many years ago until I dripped some onto a linoleum floor and it discolored the floor. I wouldnt want stuff that can do that to be in my fish and tank. It should be outlawed.
