My Filter is Silent and runs nicely but my biggest disappointment is that it just don't force the debris through the filter pads,

I have had it running for a few months now and my fish are fairly wasteful and any food they dont eat gets sucked in, (my tank looks lovely and clean Granted)

But recently I open it up to find vast amounts of waste floating inside of the cannister and nothing on the filter pads.

when it come back to priming with the nice easy prime (superb might I add)
I pull it down then back up (up motion releases air) I get a huge amount of debris fly into my tank making it a total mess.

so I just decided to start looking for a new cannister (eheim being only type I have ever used) Mainly the Eheim Original or a teratec ex700, I wouldn't mind the Fx5 but its a fair amount,

I'm no guru but I'm Convinced its better if it forces the debris though the filter media, Granted it means more work but thats not to much of a bad thing.

I hope for some constructive discussion about the Eco range regarding no force through the filter media.
And good alternatives.

Thanks for reading and Best Regards

Im running the 2236 on my 125 without problem, crystal clear water. The debris from blow back is stuff from in the pipes.

I dont think i understand what your talking about... Is it when something large gets sucked up, it doesn't go through the sponge/filter media?

If your talking about that, not everything that gets sucked up will go within the sponge... Things will be floating around down the bottom, until your next change. However, the saller particles would be trapped inside the spoinges and filter wool. But if your tank isn't nice and clean, there must be something wrong

Sounds like you may have assembled it incorrectly... Blue on the bottom, white on the top ?

personally I'm very dissapointed in the Ecco range
and that is not surprising as they are made by MP
which AFAIK is part owned by Eheim and only badged under the Eheim name.

the best Eheims, IMHO, are the Classic or pro2 range
and Tetratec are a very very close second

all cannisters will release a small amount of debris back into the tank when re-primed
as the gunk builds up on both the in and out tubes.
the best solution for this is to avoid having to re-prime them by adding twin taps.

I'm assembled correctly

I just find them disappointing,
a simple design change to force debris through the media would make all the difference.

But the debris IS NOT supposed to get to the media ! Thats what the course filter pads are for...

Have to agree with Rooster,

the coarse pads at the base of the filter remove particulates and then the denitrifying media should not get clogged with crud, if there is a lot of silt and debris getting through to here you biological filter may give up the ghost, I always add a fine filter floss next to polish the water prior to discharge back into the tank.

When you re-prime the crud you see is coming from the discharge hose, if you want the majority of that stopped you will have to run a pipe cleaner through the hose each time.

If the water is bypassing the media, as it seems to be the gist of your post, there is something wrong with your filter

Steve :)

thats what I meant the Coarse filter pad, *I'm not to technicality's*
but What I'm saying is the ECO don't force the debris into it and I find it disappointing.

the whole design of how its en capsuled seems bad compared to the Teratec ex700 design or the Eheim classic,

look forget the topic I obviously can't explain very well

I had mine set up like yours. But, then...I didn't mess with it as much, so I set it up differently.

I have mine in an Oscar tank, 55 gallon.

What I did was removed the sponges and added in more of biomedia, the "cocoa puffs". Now...I have a biofilter without any mess. Honestly, I never have to touch it. I just look and make sure there's nothing wrong and let it go. End of problem.

But...I also run an HOB filter for making the water more pristine. Honestly, since doing that...I have much less water problems, i.e. I do a water change and test every week and my parameters don't change all that much every week.

No filter on the market 'forces' the debris onto the pads, the syphon action pulls the water out of the tank and then the water then acts as the suction for the pump on the outlet of the filter

The idea of the encapsulation is to stop the channelling of debris past the media in exactly the same way that the tetra or the classic or professional Eheim models do

:)
