has anyone here ever dismantled a tank, i dont mean removing everything in it, i mean physically break it down into its individual glass sections, if so i would be interested in knowing how it's done, do i just set to with a stanley knife and slice the sealant or is there more to it???

oh going by the title i was thinking "is he leaving us already?"

The easist way to do it is get a cheese wire or a guitar string and use that down the joins, but be carefull they don't fall off so get someone to hold it! Easiler than stanley knife by far!!!

Oh if you are then rejoining it you need to get rid of all the silicone as it wont stick to old silicone well!

Tape the glass, and then tape the panes together too, then slice down the joints with a new stanley blade, ensuring you remove all silicone.

i have no intention of leaving, this hobby of ours just holds too much fascination for me, my biggest worry is how do i avoid wanting to upgrade to something massive..... well maybe the cost will prevent that lol

why would you want to dismantle a tank?
to replace a scratched panel?
i know someone with a tank they no longer need and i want to cannibalise it to make a custom sized sump which i can fit into my cabinet. so i'm gonna dismantle it and get down to the glazier , thats the latest of my many plans, i seem to be coming up with a new one everyday at the moment

This is how i made my sump. I found it to be a bit of a nightmare if i'm honest. Silicon is amazingly effective at holding glass in place and if the glass is close together it can be a nightmare to get started. I tried stanley, fishing wire and guitar string and none where very effective in my case. In the end i had to resort to brute force and ignorance but that wasn't so bad as the glass was 10mm so was very strong. If you can get 1 side off it's pretty easy from there.
