I was wanting to no if discus were hard to keep because people keep telling me that they are. I can keep tropical fish like guppies but never tryed discus. i have lots of time to spend with them and i no a lots about them its just i wanted to no if they were hard?

Welcome to the forums!

From what I have read they need very good conditions which some people could find dificult to maintain but as you said you know lots about them you will know what you would need to do!

Beacause most Discus now are tank bred they arent as difficult to keep as they used to be but you do need to know what you are doing.
I do very regular water changes on my big tank and mine are fine.

Your best bet is to read up as much as you can about their tank requirements but they arent as difficult to keep as some would have you believe but they are a big step up from guppies etc.

i would love to keep discus, but they are very fussy about the water quality, you are restricted as to what other fish you can keep with them (nothing too skittish) and they are VERY expensive, so if you do something wrong an dyou lose one.. it ain't good!

1 key to success in keeping discus is water change other stuff comes second but if u can keep large daily water change there should be visually no problem to keep discus at all.

I don't have discus and really haven't studied much on them although I do think they are pretty fish and would possibly try them somewhere down the line. If daily water changes are the norm, what do you do if you take a vacation and are gone for a week or so?

IMO, daily water change is an over kill. Weekly water change and good filteration is almost mandatory, however. I've kept mine for about 6 years before giving them away when I moved. I only did weekly water change.

Almost as important is their diet. Discus needs varied meaty food with some vegetable matters. There are some receipes on the web that you can try.

Like kat and james mentioned, discus cost A LOT of money. It wouldn't be really worth buying if you haven't had experience with fish. Discus are definately not beginner fish, and should only be bought by experienced fish keepers. I've heard that breeding discus is a lot of fun, would love to do it, but I'm low on cash. HAHA
