what other cichlids can you put in with discus fish in a 55 gal tank?

Discus are Cichlids, and i dont know of any that can go with them due to there high maintenance of water.

those fish are a headache.

Sorry forgot to tell ya, its hard to put any other fish in a 55g with cichlids, because they are a pack fish, they do better when there is a MIN of 5 in the tank, but there best tank mates that i know of are Black Ghost knifes Fish.

Discus aren't a headahce an are well worht the maintenace as I am sure you will agree loaching. There are several other Cichlids that can live with Discus and survive the higher temps, my favourites would be Apistogramma, a group of South American Dwarf Cichlids, most of these would be suitable and provide god colour and activity. You could also try another dwarf species of Cichlid like Bolivain Rams for example.

Can you be more specific, are you saying that all Cichlids are 'pack fish' and must be in groups? Or are you talking about individual species? I can suggest fish like Dovii which are most certainly not 'pack fish' in any shape or form. But than there are others that might be considered 'pack fish' but most of the species form New World Cichlids to African Cichlids are not considered 'pack fish'.

There are plenty of fish that you can put in a 55g with Cichlids and if you mean Discus there is a good sized list including Clown Loaches, small L-Numbered Plecs, Rummy Nosed Tetras, Cardinal Tetras and many more................If you are talking about Cichlids in general then it depends on the individual fish, African Cichlids usually need a tank meeting the demands they have and alot of other fish can't live with them because of their aggressive nature and water conditions. What species of Cichlid dose better in "5 in the tank"?

I suggest you either do some research before posting or you do not post unless you are sure you can provide correct and useful information on a species you know about through experience or research. :)

Assuming a nicely planted 55, you could easily have some dwarf cichlids in with the discus. "Ideal" water parameters are very similar. Apiostos, rams, curviceps, etc., would be fine.

But, like i said in my first post "I" dont know of any, but i DO know of that BGK's go well with them.

I think the topic says Discus the last time i checked.
It says cichlids, too.

When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

Ryan, very nicely done post, well thought-out.

Redgold, welcome to the forum :)

What are Apiostos?
Ty for the welcome.

Are you going to pick at typos? I've seen a lot of your posts, that's not a good idea for you to do.

If that was a joke, then I apologize. But I didn't see any smilies.

all i said was welcome and i only asked a question, and i was for real about it as well. i wasnt bagging a typo.

We were talking about discus, we never said anything about "other" cichlids, so i dont see how im digging into a hole.

Welcome redgold you sound like a good new member and thankyou for your comment.

Vip, we are not picking on you in anyway, the topic question was
what other cichlids can you put in with discus fish in a 55 gal tank?
"what other cichlids" implies what other species of Cichlids can you keep with Discus, now we suggest a species of South American Dwarf Cichlid like Apistogrammas, the topic dose say Discus but the questions states 'what other Cichlids can you put with Discus' so I answered accordingly.

If as you are saying that five Discus in the tank is best, then your are correct that young Discus need to be in groups to allow themselves to pair off and groups of four or more are good to make sure no individual is bullied. But I simply made the comment that the thread was asking for Cichlids that can go with Discus as well, it wasn't asking about Discus, this is why your post confused me. I answered the question the member directly asked rather than informing them about the Discus needs as I assumed that she is already keeping them? I thought you were talking about Cichlids in general and stating that all are 'pack fish' and should be kept in groups and that no more can possible go in the tank, maybe be abit more specific in future, I know you understood your post but others may not have, me for one.

Black Ghost Knife Fish are predators by nature so if there are any small fish in the tank it may not be advisable and in time the BGK may outgrow the tank and its smaller companions and view them as a meal, so IMO they are not ideal tank companions for life, and the member who started the topic also asked for other Cichlids so we suggested a species of Apistogramma because thats what the question asked, we could have suggested other tank mates for Discus but I assumed that the question meant that the member was only inquiring about other Cichlids. :)

Ok, you win :) i give in easy when i am proved wrong, the only reason why i keept going was because someone said stop digging a hole.
The info you just typed was correct to the dot, i went on about what there should be 5 in a tank and blah blah blah, but i will say sorry to you as you are correct.
As for the other person i couldnt care less about them.
