right one of our cats Lu-Li is very vocal and very demanding, particularly in the mornings. She's got into a habit/routine which I would like to break, would like some advice on how to go about it.

Basically from the minute I sit up in bed in the morning she's miaowing at me for her breakfast, she'll miaow literally every 10 seconds or so from the minute i set foot out of the bed until i go and feed her. we've another cat who doesn't do this at all, just waits patiently until I feed her and only starts miaowing at me as I get the food out of the cupboard for her.

Morning routine is basically I get up, go to the bathroom and go to the loo, as I’m sat on the loo she comes in and miaows at me and rubs herself around my legs, then I’ll go back into the bedroom and brush my hair as I’m doing this she stands in the door between the bedroom and the landing and miaows at me from there, then as I go to the bathroom she runs off downstairs thinking I’m going to feed her straight away, I go into the bathroom and get into the shower, she’ll come back upstairs maybe 20 seconds later and she jumps up onto the basin which is opposite the shower so she can see in to me and all the time I’m in the shower she constantly miaows at me. I don’t take ages but I like to wash my hair every day so I’m probably in there for 5-10 minutes. Then I go back into the bedroom to get dressed, again she follows me and stands in the doorway and moans constantly. I don’t blow dry my hair or wear make up most days so I don’t take ages, just long enough to find something to wear, put it on and brush my hair. Then I go downstairs, the other cat is often out overnight so I let her in first then give both cats their food. So this probably takes 20 minutes or so, all this time Lu-Li is just constantly moaning at me and it really does my head in. She’s a lovely cat (if a touch boisterous) apart from this but you know when something happens everyday and it just grates on your nerves that little bit more every day!!

Our bedroom door doesn’t close properly so can’t shut her out of there (we’re refurb’ing the house….. it’s on the list of jobs but it’s nowhere near the top of the list!!), the bathroom door does shut but if I shut her out she just stands outside the door, scratches at it and moans, I don’t want her running the doors so I’ve found it’s best to just leave them open.

We have a bottle of water which we use to squirt at them when they are being naughty and it seems to sort of work short term but not long term. So if they get squirted they will stop whatever they are doing, but it doesn’t stop them from going back and doing it again. I’ve tried flicking water at her from the shower while she’s moaning at me and she runs off but it back a minute later doing it again.

Is there anything I can do to discourage this or break her habit?

You get my vote of sympathy - and welcome to my world with Mika
in my case flicking water isn't even helpful - she loves it and is like "ooo, a game! more, more". Verbally telling off doesn't help either because she's like "yeah, WHATever".....

the rest of the day she's fine, she is a little bit boisterous with our other cat sometimes but Miss Mittens has always been pretty independant and likes to play outside so she's pretty happy to just take herself off out if Lu-Li just gets too much for her.

I'm really not a morning person and neither is my other half, so it's when every morning is greeted by 20 minutes solid moaning it can kind of grate on your nerves!!

Since this is a cat we're talking about, there is only one solution. First thing you do after sitting up is race pell-mell for the kitchen and serve up some food for her. That'll solve it. lol

My Molly is a total food hog too, and she loves to scream and cry (I think of it as her encouraging me, otherwise I'd go insane). She used to be a total pest in the mornings, since she'd paw at me, which would be sooooooo cute until she starts to get frustrated and lets the nails poke out a little bit. Then a little more. Then drawing her paw along my skin with the nails out rather than simply poking and patting. To escape, I'd burrow under the covers, but eventually I'd come back out and she'd be back all over my face. She actually doesn't do it anymore, and I guess she just finally got tired of waiting, of watching me retreat under the covers when she'd be poking me. So she let me know she was hungry, then she'd curl up by my knees and wait. She managed to teach Buffy the poke-mummy-in-the-face method first, though. Buffy's not so bad, but sometimes I'll feel a little paw poke me in the eyeball, and I'll be surprised to be looking into Buffy's face rather than Molly's.

I'm determined not to give in and start feeding her first thing, I think it'll just encourage her to be more demanding if she learns that I will give in.

I don't see the problem? You just have a very vocal and demanding cat heh.
Now if she was trying to claw your eyes out or something to get you to hurry, then maybe I'd see the problem there :p lol

lol, she just does my head in and I'd like to be able to get her to stop if I can!!!

I am quite surprised that she shows this behaviour, surely Ian is scary enough in the mornings to keep her at bay? :D

lmao

Ian's a veritable angel in the mornings compared to me!!!!

just kick her and she'll stop

but have you tried chucking water at her?

edit:when i say chucking water at her take her outside and chuck a bucket full over her :p

My cat's also quite vocal but seems to just go through various phases of crying. I (personally) would just feed her a little earlier and hope that she gets over it. I wouldn't worry too much about teaching her that crying will get her what she wants--based on you description, she already believes it!

one of mine does the meowing in the morning ( usually about 2 minutes before the alarm go off) but he doesn't want food or going out, he just want a cuddle  and then he keep quiet for the rest of the day. :)

i'm don't know what type of food you give to your cats, but what about leaving some biscuits out over night?

wet food doesnt fill a cat of anysize, with our's we feed wet food evening and night, and during the day and night bowls are topped up with biscuits
